Does Microblading Hurt and What Can You Expect During the Process?

If you’ve been thinking about microblading or permanent makeup, one question probably comes to mind first: Does it hurt? Let’s talk about it! Because knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and calm before your brow appointment.

How Much Does Microblading Hurt?

The short answer: not as much as you think!

Many people imagine microblading as being like a tattoo - but it’s actually much less intense. I usually describe the sensation as a little “spicy” or scratchy, especially on the first pass. For most clients, it feels more like a gentle scratching or pinching than real pain.

Unlike traditional tattoos, microblading works on the surface layer of the skin, not deep into the dermis. That’s why the discomfort is minimal and very manageable for most people.

Why I Don’t Numb the First Pass

In my studio, I typically skip numbing for the first pass. This allows me to see how your skin reacts, ensuring your pigment settles beautifully and evenly. Don’t worry - most clients are surprised at how tolerable it is.

After the first pass, we can apply a numbing cream for any additional strokes or shading, making the rest of the process even more comfortable.

Factors That Affect Pain

Everyone experiences microblading differently. A few things that can influence your comfort include:

  • Pain tolerance – Everyone’s threshold is different, and that’s perfectly normal

  • Skin type – Sensitive skin may feel a little more tingling

  • Area of the brow – Some spots, like near the arch or tail, might feel slightly more “spicy"

  • Numbing options – As mentioned, some passes can be numbed to minimize discomfort

How to Make It More Comfortable

Here are a few tips to make your microblading or permanent makeup appointment as smooth as possible:

  1. Avoid caffeine or alcohol before your session - they can make your skin more sensitive

  2. Eat a light meal beforehand to keep blood sugar steady

  3. Relax and breathe - tension can make your skin feel more sensitive

  4. Trust your artist - a skilled professional can work efficiently and comfortably

Bottom Line: It’s Tolerable, Not Torture

Microblading and permanent makeup might feel a little spicy, but it’s generally less painful than a traditional tattoo. Most clients are surprised at how manageable it is - and the stunning results are 100% worth it!
